Imagine if Wizkid hadn’t taken a stand against BET,
African Artists might still be receiving Awards backstage.
Before 2018, BET Awards used to present awards to African artists in a small room in front of a cameraman, hours before the main show started.
Wizkid made a move to stop BET’s disrespect towards African artists.
In 2012, Wiz won “BET Best International Act”. He declined to show up for the event.
Fast forward to 2015 he publicly criticized their approach, he stated, “I won’t be attending your preshows and nominee parties if am getting the Award 10 am before the main show.
Just a bunch of peeps putting together a show.”
This Bold statement angered the BET.
Breaking into the US music industry was difficult for wiz back then, However, he stood his ground, even at the risk of his career.
In 2018, Davido received the award, becoming the first African artist to be honored at the main BET show in front of a live audience.
