In a recent ruling, the Supreme Court delivered a blow to the All Progressives Congress (APC) and its candidate, Akanimo Udofia, dismissing their appeal against the election victory of Akwa Ibom State Governor, Umo Eno. The apex court not only upheld the findings of the lower courts but also criticized the APC for what it deemed a waste of time.
The Court of Appeal in Lagos had previously affirmed Governor Eno’s victory, dismissing all appeals against his election. The key issues revolved around allegations of certificate forgery and criminal convictions, which the appellate court found unsubstantiated and set aside by a court of law, respectively.
During the Supreme Court proceedings, the APC’s counsel, Hassan Liman, was advised to withdraw the appeal as the lower courts’ decisions were grounded in factual accuracy. Liman argued that the governor and his deputy were constitutionally disqualified due to past convictions, but acknowledged that the convictions were purportedly set aside by a Magistrate Court in Abuja, not the Appeal Court.
The Supreme Court’s strong words, accusing the APC of wasting time, shed light on the significance of factual accuracy in legal matters. The dismissal reinforces the credibility of the election results and the democratic process in Akwa Ibom.
This ruling highlights the importance of presenting solid evidence in legal challenges and the consequences of pursuing appeals based on unsubstantiated claims. As political landscapes continue to evolve, legal proceedings play a crucial role in upholding the integrity of elections and the democratic system as a whole.
