“Police Alert: Beware! Protests Could Actually Protest!” – IGP’s Statement on TAKE IT BACK MOVEMENT

1

Further to the earlier statement made in respect of the proposed/planned country-wide protest by the TAKE IT BACK MOVEMENT, the Nigeria Police Force wishes to highlight that while protests in a democracy can be organized, they must adhere to rules and regulations. The police reiterate the importance of decency, respect for the rule of law, and the rights of other citizens to move freely without any threat or inhibition.

The Nigeria Police Force has recently engaged with the leadership of the TAKE IT BACK MOVEMENT and their solicitors. They clarified that, as in any civilized society, the group should submit to the respective State Commissioners of Police the details of their protests, including the venue, route, timing, and modus operandi. This information is essential for the police to protect both the organizers and the general public.

The police also emphasized that the organizers must ensure control over the protest to prevent it from being hijacked by unscrupulous elements who may cause harm or damage to property. The organizers have not provided the required information to the police, which is mandatory under the Constitution, the Police Act, and other laws.

Intelligence reports suggest that the protests may lead to mayhem, including attacks on citizens, markets, stores, private and public properties, and government infrastructure. The name “TAKE IT BACK MOVEMENT” has been flagged for its undemocratic and illegal connotations.

In response, all police formations across the country are on high alert to protect lives and properties. The police are prepared to act decisively against any act of arson, intimidation, harassment, or criminality that may arise from the protest. Perpetrators will be arrested and prosecuted promptly.

Signed,
Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, PhD NPM
Inspector General of Police
