Renowned Nigerian singer, songwriter, and actress Onyeka Onwenu tragically passed away on Tuesday after performing at a birthday party in Lagos. The celebrated music icon collapsed at Reddington Hospital in Victoria Island after falling ill during the private event.
Onwenu was attending a friend’s birthday celebration when she took to the stage for a performance. Shortly after returning to her seat, she suddenly collapsed. Emergency responders quickly arrived and transported her to the hospital, where she was later pronounced dead. The cause of death has not yet been confirmed.
A source, speaking on condition of anonymity, shared, “It is very sad. Onyeka Onwenu just performed at the birthday of Mrs. Stella Okoli of Emzor Pharmaceuticals tonight. After performing, she slumped. She was taken to Reddington Hospital but couldn’t make it.”
Onyeka Onwenu, 72, was a multi-talented artist whose career spanned over four decades. Known for her music that blended genres like reggae, pop, and highlife, she often addressed social and political issues through her songs. Some of her most popular tracks include “One Love,” “Iyogogo,” and “Ekwe.”
Beyond her musical achievements, Onwenu was also a prominent actress, journalist, and politician. She served as the chairperson of the Imo State Council for Arts and Culture and was appointed Executive Director/Chief Executive Officer of the National Centre for Women Development.
Earlier this year, Onwenu had announced she was producing a movie chronicling her experiences in the music industry over several decades. She had expressed her excitement to share her personal story and the evolution of Nigerian music.
Onyeka Onwenu’s passing is a great loss to Nigeria and the global music community. She leaves behind a legacy of artistic excellence and social activism that will continue to inspire future generations.
