Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State has acknowledged the significant challenges facing road infrastructure in the state, emphasizing that no administration can completely reconstruct all the roads, even within an eight-year term. Speaking during an inspection of roads in the Ifo Local Government Area, Governor Abiodun urged patience from the residents, noting the complexities inherited from previous administrations.
“We cannot reconstruct all the bad roads in three years. In fact, no administration can reconstruct all the roads in Ogun State, not even in 8 years,” Governor Abiodun stated, highlighting the scale of the task at hand.
He criticized past administrations for undertaking ambitious projects that were left incomplete, leading to widespread neglect and deterioration of road conditions. Governor Abiodun particularly highlighted the conversion of single carriageways into dual carriageways without completion, which exacerbated the infrastructure deficit.
Since assuming office in May 2019, Governor Abiodun has faced mounting pressure from residents, especially on social media, with the hashtag #DapoFixOgunRoads trending on Twitter. Citizens have shared images and videos depicting the poor state of roads, underlining the urgency for improvements.
In response to these concerns, Governor Abiodun assured that his administration is committed to equitable distribution of road construction projects across the state. He pledged immediate action on critical routes, including the Denro-Isashi-Akute road, where he ordered the contractor to complete the project within two weeks.
“My pledge is to ensure active construction begins within the next two to three weeks on key routes like Alagbole-Ajuwon and Akute-Ajuwon roads,” Governor Abiodun affirmed.
Moving forward, the governor disclosed plans to award contracts for the Hercules Giwa (Oke Aro Rd), sections of the Akute-Ijoko road, and the road leading to Yakoyo, signaling a proactive approach to addressing the state’s infrastructure needs.
Governor Abiodun’s comments reflect a pragmatic acknowledgment of the challenges while outlining proactive steps to improve road infrastructure across Ogun State.
