In 2009, my team and I launched the “Jenifer’s Diary” brand. After a long hiatus, I couldn’t continue the project. During this period, Mr. Folu Coca, a prominent figure at the time, persistently invited me to his club, expressing his desire for me to perform there. I eventually took some of my crew members to the club, where I had the fortunate opportunity to meet D’banj for the first time.
We danced and enjoyed the night, and then D’banj took me aside to a quiet place and asked, “Why did you let Jenifer slip away like that?” I explained that we had planned and completed seasons 1 and 2. He responded, “That is a brand you can live off for the rest of your life. Don’t stop creating episodes.”
D’banj insisted that “Jenifer” had to come back and promised his support in making it happen. I reached out to him for advice and support, and he not only provided valuable guidance but also offered significant financial backing, which brought me to tears. With no strings attached, his support enabled us to start filming “The Return of Jenifer.”
Today, “Jenifer’s Diary” has become a highly successful series, earning billions of naira and significantly boosting my career. Nollywood actress Funke Akindele shares this story to highlight how Afrobeats legend D’banj played a pivotal role in revitalizing her movie creation career and contributing to its tremendous success.
