FG Increases Passport Fees: What Nigerians Need to Know

In a move that has garnered attention across the nation, the Federal Government has officially approved an increase in the fees for Nigerian passports, set to take effect on September 1, 2024. The upward review comes as part of efforts to maintain the quality and integrity of the Nigerian Standard Passport, according to the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS).

New Passport Fees: What You Can Expect

Starting September 1, Nigerians will see a significant increase in passport fees:

  • The 32-page passport booklet with a 5-year validity, previously priced at Thirty-Five Thousand Naira (N35,000.00), will now cost Fifty Thousand Naira (N50,000.00).
  • For those opting for the 64-page passport booklet with a 10-year validity, the price has risen from Seventy Thousand Naira (N70,000.00) to One Hundred Thousand Naira (N100,000.00).

However, for Nigerians living abroad, there is some relief, as the NIS has confirmed that the fees will remain unchanged for those applying in the Diaspora.

The Reason Behind the Increase

The NIS spokesman, DCI Kenneth Udo, explained that the fee increase is aimed at ensuring that the Nigerian passport remains of high quality and that its integrity is upheld in the face of evolving global standards. The revision reflects the government’s ongoing commitment to providing a passport that meets international requirements, while also improving the overall service delivery process.

While the adjustment may be seen as a financial burden for many Nigerians, the NIS assures citizens that it is committed to transparency and quality service. The hope is that the increase in fees will contribute to a more efficient and reliable passport issuance process.

Addressing the Concerns: The NIS Response

The NIS has expressed regret for any inconvenience the fee hike may cause prospective applicants. However, they remain firm in their resolve to provide quality service that aligns with global best practices. For those preparing to renew their passports or apply for the first time, the NIS recommends taking note of the new rates and planning accordingly.

Transparency and accountability are at the core of this decision, with the NIS promising to continue streamlining the passport application process. Applicants can expect improved service, faster processing times, and enhanced security features on their passports.

Moving Forward: What Nigerians Should Do

With the new passport fees set to take effect on September 1, Nigerians planning to apply for or renew their passports should prepare for the increased costs. If you need a passport soon, it may be wise to start your application process before the new fees are implemented.

The NIS has reassured Nigerians that the fee hike will contribute to an overall better experience in securing a Nigerian passport, but it’s important for everyone to stay informed and ready for the change.

As always, the NIS encourages applicants to use official channels for passport applications and to avoid middlemen or fraudulent agents who may attempt to exploit the situation. By staying proactive and informed, Nigerians can ensure a smooth transition into this new phase of passport issuance in the country.
