Family Tensions Rise as Wigwe Estate Faces Controversy Over Guardianship and Asset Control
The family of the late Herbert Wigwe, former Group Managing Director and CEO of Access Bank, finds itself embroiled in a dispute over the guardianship of his children and the management of his vast estate. The conflict stems from the actions of Herbert’s long-time business partner, Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede, who has reportedly assumed control of both the children’s guardianship and the deceased’s assets.
The controversy came to light through an affidavit filed by Christian Wigwe, Herbert’s cousin, at the Lagos State High Court Probate Registry. In the affidavit, Christian accuses Aig-Imoukhuede of sidelining the family, particularly Herbert’s father, Pastor Shyngle Wigwe, in both the guardianship of Herbert’s three minor children and the handling of his estate. This legal battle follows the tragic death of Herbert Wigwe, his wife Chizoba, and their son Chizi in a helicopter crash near the California-Nevada border in February, leaving behind four children.
According to Christian Wigwe, Aig-Imoukhuede has exerted influence over the late Herbert’s eldest daughter, Otutochi, who is reluctant to question her father’s business partner due to traditional values and the fear of antagonizing him. Christian’s affidavit challenges the role of Aig-Imoukhuede, arguing that Herbert’s father should naturally serve as the guardian for his grandchildren, providing both stability and emotional healing after the family’s devastating loss.
The affidavit further questions the application of Herbert’s will, which was lodged at the Lagos State Probate Registry but executed in the United States. Christian suggests that the will was primarily focused on Herbert’s U.S. assets and may not fully address his Nigerian properties. He claims that Aig-Imoukhuede’s actions have undermined Pastor Shyngle Wigwe’s role as head of the family and guardian of his grandchildren.
While the affidavit acknowledges Aig-Imoukhuede’s financial support for the deceased’s family, it raises concerns about his lack of formal accountability regarding the management of Herbert’s assets. Tensions within the family have escalated as relatives gravitate toward Aig-Imoukhuede, fearing exclusion from the estate.
Despite the family tensions, a public statement signed by Emeka Wigwe, a family member, has refuted allegations of a dispute over Herbert’s estate. The statement emphasizes that the family remains united and focused on the well-being of Herbert’s children.
As the legal proceedings unfold, the battle over guardianship and control of the Wigwe estate continues to stir controversy, drawing attention to the complexities of managing a legacy in the wake of tragedy.
