The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has alerted the general public about a planned protest orchestrated by a shadowy group aiming to instigate unrest against the Commission. In recent days, this group has been actively campaigning on social media, recruiting impressionable young Nigerians, including students, to oppose the EFCC’s activities.
This campaign, masked as resistance to the Commission’s enforcement of cybercrime laws, raises significant concerns. While the EFCC respects citizens’ rights to protest, emerging evidence suggests that corrupt individuals under investigation or prosecution are behind this so-called protest. Their goal appears to be to exploit the situation to orchestrate a national uprising, potentially threatening the peace and security of Nigeria.
As a responsible law enforcement organization, the EFCC will not tolerate any breakdown of law and order, particularly around its offices nationwide. In collaboration with other security agencies, the Commission is taking necessary measures to counter potential threats to the country’s peace and security.
The EFCC appeals to parents, guardians, and heads of tertiary institutions to ensure that their wards are not manipulated into participating in this proxy war against the Commission, driven by corrupt interests. The Commission’s fight against corruption and cybercrime aims to protect the future of Nigeria’s youth. If the nation continues to be perceived globally as a hub of fraudsters, the youth’s future will be jeopardized.
