Bobrisky Scandal: House of Reps to Visit EFCC and Prison Over Alleged Corruption

In a dramatic twist to the ongoing investigation into allegations of corruption, the House of Representatives Committee is set to visit the Lagos offices of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Nigeria Correctional Service (NCoS) on October 21, 2024. This visit stems from serious accusations made by popular crossdresser, Idris Okuneye, better known as Bobrisky, in a shocking audio recording leaked by social media influencer VeryDarkMan.

The investigation, led by Chairman Ginger Onwusibe, follows claims that Bobrisky allegedly paid a sum of N15 million to avoid serving time for his conviction on money laundering charges. The controversial figure was convicted on April 5, 2024, and sentenced to six months in prison for the abuse of the naira but regained his freedom on August 5, 2024, amidst swirling rumors of preferential treatment while in custody.

During an investigative hearing on October 1, officials from the EFCC, NCoS, and VeryDarkMan were questioned over the allegations, with Bobrisky at the center of it all. VeryDarkMan presented an audio recording in which Bobrisky allegedly confessed to never having spent time in an actual prison, claiming he was housed in a private apartment throughout his supposed incarceration. According to Bobrisky, this was made possible through the intervention of his powerful connections, including a “godfather” who ensured he avoided prison.

In a subsequent audio released by VeryDarkMan, Bobrisky further claimed that he paid N5 million upfront to a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) in an effort to secure a Federal Government pardon. The crossdresser, whose account was frozen by the EFCC, said that the SAN had initially demanded N10 million for his legal services but agreed to proceed with half the payment while the pardon request was submitted.

These revelations have sparked national attention and public outcry, especially given the seriousness of the allegations. Bobrisky’s claims of receiving special treatment during his sentence have fueled criticism of the correctional system and the EFCC, with many calling for accountability and transparency.

Adding to the drama, VeryDarkMan caused a stir during the hearing, refusing to answer any questions until Bobrisky was made to face the public himself. It took the intervention of his counsel and committee members to convince him to speak after assurances that Bobrisky would also be called to testify in a public hearing.

As the investigation deepens, the committee’s upcoming visit to Lagos will be crucial in uncovering the truth behind these explosive allegations. With Bobrisky’s name at the center of the scandal, all eyes are now on the next steps in the case, as the public awaits further developments in what is shaping up to be one of the most talked-about legal sagas in Nigeria.

Will Bobrisky be held accountable for the claims he’s made, or will his powerful connections once again shield him from justice? Only time will tell as the House of Reps committee digs deeper into the alleged corruption within the EFCC and the Nigeria Correctional Service.
