Anambra Police Arrest Teenager Who Lured and Held Young Girls Hostage for Ransom
In a significant breakthrough, the Anambra State Police Command has arrested a 19-year-old suspect and three accomplices who allegedly lured young girls through social media, held them hostage, and demanded ransom from their families.
Victims Rescued in Oba
The arrest occurred on Monday, November 27, at around 11:54 a.m., after operatives from the Oba Police Divisional Headquarters, Idemili South Local Government Area, acted on intelligence. Two young female victims, aged between 15 and 19, were rescued from captivity in Oba, while a ransom of ₦200,000 had already been paid for their release.
A Social Media Trap
The suspect, identified as Ifechukwu Ibesimako, a 19-year-old from Aboji Village, Oba, reportedly used social media to lure his victims by initiating conversations and proposing friendships. Once trust was established, the victims were invited to meet him, only to be held hostage until their families paid ransom.
Police investigations revealed that the group had been involved in similar criminal activities in the area. One previously released victim, who had paid a ransom months ago, has come forward following the arrests.
Arrest and Investigation
The arrest of the suspect and his accomplices has shed light on their operations and criminal network. Confirming the development, the Command’s spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, disclosed that the suspects have been transferred to the Anti-Kidnapping and Robbery Squad for a comprehensive investigation.
Commissioner’s Warning
The Anambra State Commissioner of Police, CP Nnaghe Obono Itam, has urged the public, especially young people, to exercise caution when interacting with strangers on social media. He warned against the risks posed by online predators who exploit unsuspecting individuals for criminal gain.
A Wake-Up Call
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers lurking on social media platforms. The police are calling on families and communities to remain vigilant and educate young people about the risks associated with online interactions. Authorities are also intensifying efforts to crack down on criminal activities that threaten the safety of citizens.
The investigation is ongoing, and further updates are expected as the police uncover more details about the gang’s activities.
