Lagos Assembly Suspends Alimosho LG Chairman Over Allegations of Misconduct

The Lagos State House of Assembly has indefinitely suspended the Chairman of Alimosho Local Government Area, Jelili Sulaimon, following allegations of misconduct, defiance, and non-compliance. The decision was made during a plenary session where lawmakers unanimously voted to remove Sulaimon from office.

In light of the suspension, the Assembly instructed Mr. Akinpelu Johnson, the council’s Vice Chairman, to take over leadership and manage the council’s operations. The management team, including the council manager and treasurer, has been directed to cooperate fully with Johnson in his new role.

Hon. Sanni Okanlawon, Chairman of the House Committee on Local Government Administration and Chieftaincy Affairs, initiated the motion for suspension, citing Sulaimon’s alleged involvement in unrest that led to the death of Michael Ajayi during a chaotic incident in the Iyana-Ipaja area in April 2024. Okanlawon noted that Sulaimon had not only failed to comply with the Assembly’s investigation into the matter but also ignored directives and mismanaged public funds.

Hon. Noheem Adams, Majority Leader of the House, supported the suspension, highlighting that Sulaimon’s defiance and disregard for procurement and budgetary processes were alarming. He stated that this action would send a strong message to other council chairmen about the importance of compliance with the law.

Hon. Nureni Akinsanya, Chairman of the House Committee on Public Accounts for Local Government, also referenced a damning report from the Auditor-General, which detailed financial irregularities and Sulaimon’s failure to adhere to proper regulations.

In response to the unanimous decision, Speaker Mudashiru Obasa directed the Clerk of the House, Barr. Olalekan Onafeko, to officially communicate the Assembly’s resolution to the necessary authorities, ensuring that the transition of leadership takes effect immediately.
